About Us
Support for Refugees East Midlands (SFREM) is a registered charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers in the East Midlands. The majority of our activity is in the Newark and Sherwood area and we work in partnership with:
- Newark and Sherwood District Council
- The Nottingham Refugee Forum
- Home Start
- Support Refugees in Southwell
- Framework, Opportunity and Change
The families we currently support come from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. We help them build their new lives in the UK by:
- Befriending families and helping them settle into their new surroundings
- Supporting families to learn English
- Providing additional items such as bicycles, televisions, clothing, garden equipment, household goods
- Improving their employment prospects by offering each family driving lessons
- Hosting cultural trips and Christmas and Eid parties to strengthen communities
How you can help
- Volunteering – We are always looking for volunteers to provide befriending support to newly arrived families. Even an hours visit a week can make a big difference.
- Donations – We rely on donations to provide activities and essential integration support such as driving lessons.
